The Water Flow Rate Standard

When a new or replacement water heater is installed, you will need to ensure that the maximum water consumption for shower outlets connected to it does not exceed 9 litres per minute.

This requirement is met by:

• Each shower outlet connected to the water heater having a low-flow shower head or flow restrictor with a 3-star rating under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme; or
• The installed water heater being a gravity fed (vented) hot water system.

Where the shower outlets already have 3-star rated showerheads, no change will be needed.

In many situations shower outlets will not be water efficient. In these cases you will be able to meet the Flow Rate Standard by changing the showerheads.
